Chancellor

Ewuare II (born 20 October 1953) was crowned the Oba of Benin on 20 October 2016, becoming the 40th Oba. Educated at Edo College, Immaculate Conception College, South Thames College, the University of Wales, and Rutgers University, he holds degrees in Economics and Public Administration. He worked at the United Nations and served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Angola, Sweden, and Italy. Ewuare II named himself in tribute to the 15th-century Ewuare I and has collaborated with Governor Godwin Obaseki, demanding the return of the Benin Bronzes stolen in 1897.

Since ascending the throne, Ewuare II has celebrated his first anniversary with widespread participation, issued a curse against human trafficking, and encouraged peaceful political conduct during the 2020 Edo State governorship campaign. In 2021, the University of Aberdeen and Jesus College, Cambridge, repatriated Benin Bronzes to his delegation, which he received at a ceremony in Benin City in February 2022. He is currently chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria.
