History of the Transport, Logistics and Warehouse Unit

Headed by Mr. Isa Dantala Shehu, the Transport, Logistics and Warehouse Directorate started as Transport Unit in 2001 under the Registry, it was moved to Directorate of Physical Planning Works and Services after the Visitation panel in 2013. It became Transport and Logistics Unit in 2017 because of administrative convenience in line with Open and Distance Learning Principles. It was relocated to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor in 2023 in line with NOUN blueprint.

It became Directorate of Transport, Logistics and Warehouse on the 1^st November, 2025 as approved by the University’s Governing Council under the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.

The Directorate is divided into Three (3) Units for administrative operational convenience according to Open and Distance Learning Principles thus: Transport Unit, Logistics Unit and Warehouse Unit.

SERVICES & ACTIVITIES:

The Unit is divided into three, namely:

2. Logistics

3. Warehouse

TRANSPORT UNIT

• Initiate purchase of vehicles and recommend the type and model to be purchased by the University.
• Carry out allocation of vehicles to all the Faculties, Directorates, Study Centres and Units of the University.
• Coordinate maintenance of all the University’s vehicles.
• Liaise with the relevant agencies such as the Nigerian Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, Vehicle Inspection Office on vehicles and drivers related matters.
• Liaise with the insurance unit of the University for vehicles and drivers’ insurance.
• Organize training and workshops for drivers in conjunction with the training Directorate of the University.
• Coordinate the disposal of National Open University of Nigeria Unserviceable Vehicles.
• Initiate the process of tyre purchase for all University’s vehicles.
• Coordinate the activities of staff bus.
• Handling of transportation of Council members, National Universities Commission Accreditation team, VIPs and Foreign experts nationwide.

LOGISTICS UNIT

• This unit is saddled with the responsibility of liaising with the warehouse for weighing, loading and transporting of course materials to all our study centres.
• It coordinates the activities of all our registered logistics companies.
• Monitor the movement of course materials to study centres and confirm proper delivery.
• Submit the cost of transporting course materials to the study centres from our logistics companies for payment according to the signed memorandum.
• Distribution of Examination materials like answer booklets, marked scripts and mopping to warehouse, computers etc.
• Handling of any other logistics related matters of the University.

WAREHOUSE UNIT

• Generate the out-of-stock record of course materials and liaise with Management Information System Directorate for the number of registered students per course before sending a request to the printing press for reproduction.
• Collect stock balances of course materials from all the study centres for distribution of new ones.
• Receiving of printed course materials from printers after clearance by the course materials development unit.
• Receiving and re-issuance of library books from suppliers.
• Receiving and distribution of convocation brochures to the Academic Registry.
• Packaging of received course materials for logistics movement.

ACHIEVEMENTS

• The Directorate has efficiently distributed over 100 (hundred) tones of course materials to all study centres nationwide.
• The Directorate has efficiently distributed over 50 (fifty) tones of exam materials to all study centres nationwide.
• The Directorate efficiently conveyed staff to meeting, trainings and conferences.
• The Directorate provided transportation for council members, National Universities Commission Accreditation team, VIPs and Foreign experts nationwide while in Abuja/Lagos.
• The Directorate made sure that accidents were reduced to their barest minimum.
