The Director, Kaduna Study Centre, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Mr. Yusuf Abdullahi, has said that orientation exercises for newly admitted students are intended to familiarise the freshmen with university’s policies and practices.
The director represented by the Head of Administration of the centre, Hajiya Fati Yakubu, stated that orientation exercise is also designed to provide necessary information and guidelines that the students may require throughout their stay at the university.
Abdullahi, therefore, welcomed the students to NOUN, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, and congratulated them for being part of the NOUN family.
He urged them to abide by all the laid down rules and regulations to conduct themselves and be good ambassadors of the university.
The director further warned them to shun misconducts especially examination malpractice.
Speaking about the university, the director explained that it is a Federal Government institution, created to operate an open and distance learning mode with the motto: “learn at any place, at your on pace.”
With 114 study centres across the states, local governments and some communities in the country, the university was vested with the responsibility of providing high quality and accessible education to every Nigerian, he explained.
The director urged them to always remember that the main purpose learning, which is to secure knowledge for self-upliftment and service to the nation, should be considered as a topmost priority.
Highlight of the orientation exercise was an interactive session with the students by various heads of units of the centre.
The registry, where general rules and regulations guiding students behaviour and conduct domicile, was discussed by Mrs. Abimbola Frank, while discussion on the financial issues, which centred on funding of e-wallet and other financial issues were presented by the Principal Accountant, Hajiya Amina Ismail.
Others were library, ICT, registration procedures, TMA, and how to access NOUN portal /website, store, procedure for collecting course materials and counselling on total credit units required for graduation and general counselling were explained by Mrs. Hassana Ibrahim, Mr. Ahmad Kumta, Mrs. Adijat Albadawee and the centre’s counsellor, respectively.
