NOUN Medical Diagnostic Laboratory

On June 8, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof, Olufemi Peters unveiled three new Medical Diagnostic Laboratory units of the National Open University (NOUN) at the Headquarters in Abuja. The well-equipped laboratories are:
(1) Haematology laboratory
(2) Chemical Pathology Laboratory
(3) Medical Microbiology Laboratory
It is located at the Faculty of Health Sciences block with the sole objective of reducing difficulties and enhancing first-hand diagnosis for University staff at a discounted price.

VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT

VISION STATEMENT

  • Providing affordable diagnostic services, supporting the university community and promoting health and wellness.
  • Supporting the university clinic by delivering high quality laboratory testing, following international best practices, ensuring timely responses to emergency situations, reducing the need for external testing and enhancing the university clinic capabilities.

MISSION STATEMENT:

  • To render Medical care to the university and the public, ensuring timely and effective diagnosis.
  • Expand scope of services (Range of tests) to cater to more needs.
  • To improve Quality Management System for better results and patient care.
  • To promote Health and wellness by encouraging the community to prioritize their health through regular Medical check-ups and healthy living.

My plans as the Head of the Unit are massive but for now, to ensure that the Diagnostic Laboratory performs its function to its expectation by rendering Medical care to the university community and to the public; expanding the scope of the Laboratory List of tests, improving the quality management system of the laboratory as well electronic transmission of patients results to Doctor, among others.

The Diagnostic services include:
Genotype, blood group, Full blood count, Urine culture and sensitivity Semen analysis/Culture Fasting blood sugar, Liver function test Kidney function test (EU/ Creatinine) Lipid profile, Serological tests (HIV 1&2, Hepatitis B surface Antigen, HCV, Typhoid test) Malaria microscopy and many more.

All these tests are to determine the disease’s etiology.
