History of the Transport and Logistics Unit
The Transport and Logistics unit has been in operation since 2002.
Initially, the Unit was just Transport Unit alone and it was under the Registrar’s Office.
However, after the visitation panel was set up in 2010, it was recommended that the Unit was supposed to be under the Physical Development Directorate. Therefore, the Unit was moved to the Directorate of Physical Development, Works and Services. Since then, it has been under the Directorate.
In August 2016, the Management renamed the Unit to Transports and Logistics Unit, still under the DPDW&S, and to be headed by a Deputy Registrar.
VISION
To be the leader among Nigerian Universities in providing Transport and Logistics services.
To be a Transport and Logistics Unit that is committed to providing excellent service delivery to the University.
MISSION
To provide efficient Transport and Logistics services to the University.
PHILOSOPHY
By developing the Transport and Logistics Unit, the National Open University of Nigeria seeks to ensure an efficient and effective Transport and Logistics services it has set for itself in line with the Open and Distance Learning System (ODL).
SERVICES & ACTIVITIES:
The Unit is divided into two, namely:
1. Transport
2. Logistics
TRANSPORT SECTION
It coordinates all Transports activities of the University thus:
- This unit coordinates the maintenance and allocation of the University vehicles including fuelling.
- It coordinates the movement of all University vehicles and advises University management accordingly.
- Allocation of vehicles to directorates, faculties, Study Centres and units.
- The section recommends to the University management, vehicle needs in terms of purchase and disposal.
- It also coordinates activities of the drivers, discipline the drivers, organise training, workshops.
- It recommends drivers upgrading where applicable.
- The unit also organises periodic medical check-up for drivers, especially Blood Pressure tests and eye tests, in order to ensure these vital organs are working perfectly.
- Provision of vehicles for group assignment to staff within and outside the country.
- Liaise with the Federal Ministry of Works for assessment and disposal of unserviceable vehicles.
- Provide transportation to Council Members.
LOGISTICS SECTION
It coordinates all Logistic activities of the University thus:
- Distribution of course materials to various study centres, using the University vehicles.
- Distribution of computers and ICT facilities during University examinations.
- Distribution of answer booklets to various centres before commencement of each semester examinations.
- Mopping of marked answer sheets from various marking venues to the central warehouse.
- Coordinate the relocation of the remaining University’s offices from Lagos to Abuja.
- Any other logistics activities of the University that may arise.
ACHIEVEMENTS
The Unit has efficiently distributed course materials to all study centres nationwide.
The Unit has efficiently distributed exam materials to all study centres nationwide.
The Unit has efficiently conveyed staff to meeting, trainings and conferences.
The Unit has provided transportation to council members while in Abuja.
The Unit made sure that accidents were reduced to their barest minimum.
The Unit has been able to train about seven drivers professionally as SPY Police Officers.
The Unit has organized a sensitization workshop with the theme “Defense Driving” for some drivers.
