Current Information about Activities in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office
The Office of the Vice-Chancellor is at the helms of affairs in the University. Put simply, the Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive Officer of the University. Among other responsibilities cared for by the Vice-chancellor, he leads the University’s academic and administrative departments. He is a member of Council and serves as Chair of the University Senate and several other Committees of the University. The Vice-Chancellor is responsible to Council for policy development and academic planning for the University, as well as ensuring that the University’s academic standards are maintained and that the institution’s positive image is protected.
Brief History of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor
The Office of the Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria is as old as the Institution itself. The first Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gabriel Afolabi Ojo was appointed September, 1981. He was, however, Vice-Chancellor for a short time as his tenure was truncated on 25th April, 1984 with the suspension of the University by the then military administration.
Upon the resuscitation of the University in 2003, Professor Olugbemiro Jegede was formally appointed as the second Vice-Chancellor on 20th October, 2003. Professor Jegede was Vice-Chancellor till 14th October, 2010.
Professor Vincent Ado Tenebe served as the third Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria. He was appointed in October, 2010 and remained Vice-Chancellor till 10th February, 2016.
The fourth Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu was appointed on 11th February, 2016. He held the Office till 10th February, 2021.
The current and fifth Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria is Professor Olufemi A. Peters. He assumed the Office on 11th February, 2021.
Professor Peters attended the University of Ibadan for a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry between 1976 and 1979. He obtained a Master of Science degree in Polymer Science and Technology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1982.
He later obtained a Ph.D. degree in degradation and stabilization from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) England in 1988.
Professor Peters started his teaching career at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as a graduate assistant in 1982. He joined the services of the National Open University of Nigeria in 2003 as an associate professor and later became the first scholar to be promoted to the rank of Professor in the history of the University in 2006.
At the National level, He held a five-year tenured appointment (February, 2014 – February, 2019) as the Executive Director and Chief Executive at the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI), Ilorin, an agency of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nigeria.
Prior to his appointment at NSPRI, Professor Peters had served in various capacities within the University such as Dean of Faculty of Science, Director of Examinations and Assessment, Director of Academic Planning, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
The Vice-Chancellery
The Vice-Chancellery is made up of several Offices, Directorates and Units; they are all superintended over by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and provide direct assistance to the Vice-Chancellor in specific areas of university governance. These offices include:
