A don with the Department of Employment Relations and Human Resources Management, University of Lagos, Prof. Akeem Ayofe Akinwale, has lauded women migrants for their contributions to societal development.

Akinwale stated this while presenting a paper at a virtual seminar organised by the Centre on Excellence for Migration and Global Studies (CEMGS), National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

While speaking on the topic: “The Benefits of Women’s Migration for Work in Nigeria,” Akinwale said, “Women constitute half of global population and their activities are relevant to development,”

Speaking further, the Professor of Employment and Labour Studies said the structure of women’s migration for work in Nigeria comprised: rural-rural migration, rural-urban migration, urban-rural migration, urban-urban migration, returned migration, among others.

According to him, “women migrants are predominant in the informal economy, including micro and small-scale enterprises, a sizeable number of women migrants are employed in the organised private sector, including banks, manufacturing industry, telecommunication industry and oil and gas industry.

“The benefits of women’s involvement for work in Nigeria showed that the work of women migrants has been of significant benefits to women migrants and different categories of persons in different ways in rural and urban areas, depending on their responsibilities and location.

“Women migrants have given and received benefits through participation in social interactions and negotiations. They have also given benefits through provision of supports to their dependants and significant others.

“Moreover, they have given benefits through their contributions to community development.”

Meanwhile, in her welcome address, the Director, CEMGS, Dr. Grace Anetor said the centre was established in 2020 to address issues concerning migration, research and other activities.

Describing CEMGS as a vibrant centre, Anetor said since inception in 2020, the centre has been waxing stronger and stronger.

While addressing the participants, Anetor said the centre has recorded some achievements which, according to her, include: production of journals, doing research in migration and global studies, peer review of journal articles, among other achievements.
