The advocacy team of the Special Study Centre for the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has taken its advocacy campaign to the Berekete Family Transport Services Limited, taxi drivers park, Wuse Zone 1, Abuja.
The visit, which took place on Saturday, August 20, 2022, which was organised by the management of the centre, and was led by the director, Mrs. Patience Abimbola Adeniyi, was aimed at enlightening the drivers about the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode of learning, and the programmes offered by NOUN.
Adeniyi told the gathering that the university is recognised because it was established by the Federal Government and has the same status as other universities in the country.
She said NOUN gives people the opportunity to learn while they also engage in their businesses unlike the conventional system where one must be in a certain place and time to study.
While urging them to enrol, she said as students of NOUN, with their smart-phones and printed study materials they can study anywhere they are at their convenience.
The director also highlighted the benefits and opportunities of enrolling into the university as NOUN students have access to online lectures which are recorded and can be replayed.
she encouraged them to take the opportunity especially as the university is mandated to take mass education to people of all ages.
On his part, the Principal Assistant Registrar, Mr. Abbas Olawale, reminded them that the information passed to them will not only benefit them but their whole family as they will have children that will need to enrol into the university.
He urged them to enrol because education adds value to human beings and also to their personality, stressing that the mission of the university is to take quality education to the people.
In his response, the Administrative Manager of the transport service, Mr. Vincent John, said that even though time is money for them, information is key and the information they received from the NOUN team was of importance to them.
John said he believed that something important has been awakened in them; the passion and desire that make them feel that they can achieve something significant.
He cited the example of their Boss who has also gone back to school to read law at his age and pointed out that age is never a limitation to education.
The manager urged the drivers to take advantage of NOUN’s flexibility to improve themselves as education affords one the opportunity to fit into society properly.
The centre director later entertained a number of questions from the drivers and all their questions were answered.
The programme also featured the distribution of flyers by the staff and top officials of the union were presented with customised advocacy souvenirs.
