Members of staff of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) who participated in an in-house training exercise for Secretarial Assistants and Adjunct Secretarial Assistants have commended the management for coming up with the training and promised to put in their best for effective and efficient service delivery.

The 5-day training was organised by the Course Materials Development Unit (CMDU) and Directorate of Staff Training and Development (ST&D) of the university.

The staff stated this while fielding questions from NOUN News correspondent shortly after drawing the curtain of the workshop on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at the university headquarters, Jabi, Abuja.

While assessing the training, the Chief Secretarial Assistant with the Africa Centre on Technology Enhanced Learning (ACETEL) and Adjunct Secretarial Assistant, Aliyu Alhassan, said the training was not only refreshing but also impactful, adding that more of such trainings should be organised for staff to enhance their productivity.

“We learnt a lot during the training. We learnt the new house style of NOUN course materials. There are some changes and we observed that the change will make the NOUN course materials reader-friendly.

“I have been working on course materials since 2007 and now we are in 2022. I have the experience. I need more trainings in both theoretical and practical aspects. There is no course material that I cannot handle. In fact, we need more trainings because new things are evolving everyday,” Alhassan said.

Narrating her own experience, Ruth Edoka, a staff in the Directorate of Staff Training and Development (ST&D) said “I have really learnt a lot of things that I don’t even know about. I have been brushed over it. It has been very engaging and interactive. I think, for me, more of such trainings should come up frequently.”

Another participant at the training and staff of CMDU, Samuel Nor, said “the training has been great. I really enjoyed the in-house training. I learnt a lot. They have introduced a new template regarding course materials in CMDU. So, the aspect I really enjoyed during the training is the new template. So far so good, it has been great. We thank God for it.”

Meanwhile, in her vote of thanks, the Director, Directorate ST&D, Magret Boro, represented by Principal Assistant Registrar (PAR), Mabel Madu, who also spearheaded the training, thanked the management for its continuous support.

She said the training was a special one and urged participants to use the knowledge acquired to enhance their performance and also impart the same knowledge to their colleagues.

On his part, the Head, CMDU, Prof. Ibrahim Shehu, represented by his deputy CMDU, Nana Erin, thanked the management and the participants for the training.

“Knowledge, they say, is power. Knowledge is wealth. If you have knowledge, you have everything. And now that you have been equipped to work with CMDU in the production of course materials into the standard level which can easily be compared to other ODL institutions around the world, we expect nothing less than the best,” Shehu stated.

The in-house training commenced on Thursday, August 18 and ended on Wednesday, August 24, 2022.
