The Benin Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) on Friday, October 14, 2022 conducted an orientation exercise for newly admitted students and pre-exams briefing for all students in preparation for the forthcoming 2022_2 examinations.
The centre director, Prof. Olubiyi Adewale, in his welcome address, informed the students that there are over 108 study centres scattered across the 36 states of the country.
He stated that Open and Distance Learning (ODL) is a system of education that eliminates most of the obstacles that keep people away from successfully meeting their educational goals such as strikes, restricted carrying capacity of conventional universities , absence of virtual learning, etc.
Speaking on the rules governing examinations at the institution, Adewale advised the students to ensure that they have all required documents to gain entry into the exams halls before commencement of any exam.
He encouraged them to be punctual always and to dress properly while coming for their exams .
The director warned against any form of examination misconduct and charged the students to ensure they respect the staff of the university and all invigilating authorities throughout the duration of the examination.
Adewale further introduced the heads of the various units at the centre, who took turns to speak about their units.
The spokesperson of the centre, Mr. Austine Egbekile, who welcomed the students to the event, reminded them that the purpose of the exercise was to acquaint the newly admitted students with their new environment and to enlighten them on the rules and regulations guiding examinations at the centre.
Egbekile went ahead to introduce the various directorates and units at the headquarters of the university and explained how they were represented at the study centre level.
The deputy director, Mrs. Stella Oguzie, who is in charge of the Counseling Unit, educated the students on the need to imbibe good practices and focus on their studies.
Oguzie also advised them to exude a high level of discipline and respect for rules governing the institution.
She went further to inform the students that her office was always open to receive all of them for counseling when the needs arise.
The Librarian, Mr. Kingsley Emeruwa, urged all the students to avail themselves of the knowledge the library has to offer as there are useful information in their various fields of study.
A senior security officer, Mr. Thomas Imhandojiemu, informed the students that the Security Unit was on ground to protect the lives and property of all students and staff.
The principal store officer, Mr. Ijeoma Onwalu, while speaking to the students stated that all books and course wares are collected from the store upon submission of evidence of course registration, adding that students should endeavour to seek the consent of the store officers before attempting to drop any course.
Miss Amaka Dike, an accountant from the Bursary Unit, informed the students that all financial issues, such as remita payments, negative balance, funding of e-wallets, etc. are handled at the bursary unit.
She therefore advised them to carry out all transactions themselves to know exactly how their money is being spent.
A representative of the ICT Unit, Mr. Solomon Eromosele, lectured the students on the various NOUN websites and how they can visit the sites for necessary information and support.
On her part, assistant registrar, Mrs. Roseline Amakwe, informed the students that all matters relating to course registration, student verification, change of study centre/ program, SIWES registration, student records and general complaints are handled by the Registry.
There was also a session of questions and answers which elicited a lot of interactions.
